The Science Behind Why Shifting Your Mindset Works
Does mindset shift really work? The Science Behind Shifting Your Mindset
So what is mindset shift anyway? We hear it all over the place now. This is the definition I found from AI A mindset shift is a fundamental change in the way an individual perceives and interprets the world around them. It involves altering one's habitual patterns of thinking and attitudes, often moving from a fixed, negative, or limiting perspective to a more positive, growth-oriented, and expansive one.
Here’s some of the major types of mindset shift fixed vs growth believing things are the waay they are and there’s nothing that you can do to change it, when really as long as we work hard at something you can typically achieve it. Negative vs positive thinking focusing on limitations, obstacles, the problem, rather than seeing the good that comes from things and that there’s always a way out of a problem. Limiting vs empowering beliefs thinking that this is the way things have to be we can’t have more we don’t deserve more, we’ll never achieve our dreams when really we all have so much untapped potential that we don’t even see.
But why should you really change your mindset? Isn’t it just about thinking positively; it doesn’t have any real impact on your brain or overall well-being.
I’m here to tell you that is a total myth!!!
Well there’s tons of benefits from shifting your mindset other than just being a more pleasant and encouraging person to be around? It enhances our relationships, like I said your more pleasant to be around, and who wants a discouraging friend that’s always looking at the bad things…..Increased productivity and success, so yes you’re dreams can come true, you can have you’r dream career along with your dream house and financial stability. You will have greater overall wel being, including you’r physical health.
So where’s the proof? Why aren’t all the doctors telling us to do this if it’s that beneficial??
Well first let’s talk about neuroplasticity, it is the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. This means that our thoughts, behaviors, and experiences can physically alter the brain's structure. When you consciously shift your mindset, you're engaging in neuroplasticity, creating new pathways that support positive thinking and emotional well-being.So this means when something happens we can either create a new positive neural connection or a negative one, so it’d bring you one step further into whatever direction you’re taking it. Next we’ll talk about cortisol. Did you know stress is actually supposed to be a good thing, it’s our body pushing us to handle the situation, and then we don’t and our level’s just keep getting higher and higher, because instead of moving out of the way of the rock rolling down the mountain you use the wrong part of your brain and just keep running from it, hoping you’re fast enough to not get squished. Here’s a better plan believe in yourself and you’re abilities, and handle business. Back to the main idea Chronic stress and negative thinking can lead to elevated cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone. High cortisol levels are linked to a range of health issues, including anxiety, depression, and even physical ailments like heart disease. By shifting your mindset to more positive and stress-reducing thoughts, you can lower cortisol levels, reducing stress and improving overall health. Positive psychology studies the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive. Research in this field has shown that practices like gratitude, optimism, and resilience can significantly enhance mental health and well-being. Shifting your mindset to focus on these positive aspects can lead to a more fulfilling and balanced life.Mindfulness and CBT are effective approaches for changing negative thought patterns. Mindfulness teaches individuals to be present and aware of their thoughts without judgment, while CBT helps identify and challenge negative thought patterns. Both methods are grounded in scientific research and have been proven to help people shift their mindsets and improve mental health. Now let’s talk about dopamine and serotonin, the feel good chemicals our brain releases. Positive thinking and mindset shifts can increase the levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain. These neurotransmitters are associated with feelings of happiness and well-being. By cultivating a positive mindset, you can boost these chemicals, leading to improved mood and emotional resilience. Sounds pretty good right?
Do you want to give it a try?
Start keeping a gratitude journal, it has been a major key in shifting my mindset when I start my day thinking of things i’m grateful for it’s hard to be angry, because I told my mind to focus on the good things. The biggest things are mindfulness and not being attached to thoughts and outcomes. Pay attention to what you are thinking and when negative thing’s come up acknowledge them and let it go. If you feel triggered by something someone says, ask why instead of getting upset about it. Don’t let other people and thoughts have that much control over you’r life and emotions. Use affirmations tell yourself that you’re amazing, and you’re going to have a great day. You can find affirmation list online. I will soon have my own. Make sure you’re letting the right people in your life, someone that’s encouraging and wants to see you succeed. Sometimes it’s a really good idea to get professional help, we all need help sometimes, and sometime’s just talking to someone that can guide you in the right direction can help you start to figure it out on your own.
I hope that you see why shifting your mindset and watching the way you think are important now. If we all moved a little more in a positive direction everyday imagine how things could be. I was a super positive person at one point in my life and pretty happy, and I went through so much and became so angry, and it was hard to find my way back, but we all have unlimited potential to make our lives the way we want them. It’s scientifically proven that only about 10% of happiness is affected by situation…..that definitely tells you things can change. Get out of your own way, stop thinking so much and get the life that you deserve, no one is meant to be unhappy, meant to be broke, meant to be trapped in a job or life they hate, we’re made to succeed we just have to put in the effort and then you’ll start seeing amazing things come your way.
